An Overview of Web Design Issues

CforAT offers a workshop in designing accessible websites.

In this one-day, hands-on workshop, participants will be introduced to access issues for people of all ages and abilities and will tour existing sites to evaluate their accessibility and effectiveness.

The general principles of accessible Web sites will be reviewed and illustrated with hands-on exercises. Through the course of the day, participants will learn to apply these principles to enhance the accessibility of a sample website. At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will have the resources they need to make accessibility a priority when they create or enhance their own virtual spaces.

  • While learning to design accessible website content, participants will:
  • Gain an understanding of the importance of designing for all people.
  • Become more familiar with the concept of disability and the rights of people with disabilities.
  • Gain hands-on experience with specialized access tools (screen-reading software, alternative input devices, etc.) designed to assist people with disabilities.
  • Learn how to evaluate Web sites for accessibility barriers.
  • Understand how Web site content can be improved for people with various functional impairments.
  • Gain hands-on experience implementing the general principles through basic and intermediate level HTML techniques.
  • Learn to enhance accessibility of sites by providing alternative formats for content.
  • Design for optimal user control over navigation, and accessibility of tables and other Web site structures.
  • Review the WC3 guidelines for accessibility and other Internet-based resources for accessible website design.
